PTM Group awarded contract to help rejuvenate Darwin’s CBD

PTM Group were recently awarded the contract to construct the much anticipated shade structure on Cavenagh Street in Darwin’s CBD. The $2.7 million structure is a result of heat mitigation studies commissioned by the Northern Territory Government. The study used thermal imaging and drone monitoring to map Darwin city’s humidity, heat and wind movement.

The timber will envelop a 22 metre wide curved steel frame with architectural design features contributing to the rejuvenation of Darwin’s CBD.

The study has resulted in the proposed construction of a 55-metre long cooling green canopy over Cavenagh Street. The pergola style structure will utilise locally sourced Stringybark timber from Gumatj Corporation in Gove. The timber will envelop a 22 metre wide curved steel frame with architectural design features contributing to the rejuvenation of Darwin’s CBD.

Vines will grow over the structure to create shade and provide cooling to the street. Incorporating an ultra high pressure climate misting system which will further cool the area and beyond the structure itself with the assistance of prevailing winds. An LED controlled mood lighting system will provide tropical ambience, with the benefit of being able to adjust the lights for special events.

PTM Group will commence construction this month (June). As you drive through the CBD be aware of the improvements underway. The project will utilise up to seventy workers including subcontractors, so please be patient while PTM Group do their best to manage noise, local traffic and pedestrians. PTM Group will make every effort to complete the project during business hours so as not to impact hotel visitors and nearby residents.

Completion of the project is estimated for October 2018.
